PRESS STATEMENT
For Immediate Release
New York, 11th February 2026 – Speaker of the National Assembly of Zambia, Dr Nelly B. K. Mutti, S.C, M.P, FAPRA, has arrived in New York, United States of America, to participate in the 2026 Parliamentary Hearing at the United Nations, jointly organised by the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and the United Nations.
Zambia’s participation in the 2026 Parliamentary Hearing underscores the country’s continued commitment to multilateralism, democratic governance, and the role of parliaments in advancing peace, sustainable development, and people-centred global solutions.
The Parliamentary Hearing is being held under the theme “Parliaments and the United Nations: Better together, delivering for the people,” and takes place as the United Nations marks its 80th Anniversary. The Hearing provides a critical platform for parliamentarians to reflect on how national parliaments and the United Nations can work more effectively together to deliver a more peaceful, just, sustainable, and prosperous world. The Hearing will be held on 12th and 13th February 2026.
The discussions will be informed by the Pact for the Future, which serves as the main roadmap towards a renewed and strengthened multilateral system with the UN at its center. The Hearing will advance Action 55 of the Pact, which commits Member States to deepening UN engagement with national parliaments, as well as the General Assembly resolution on interaction between the UN, national parliaments, and the Inter-Parliamentary Union. The deliberations will also contribute to the broader UN80 reform initiative, aimed at enhancing effectiveness, accountability, and impact across the UN system.
During the Hearing, Speaker Mutti will participate in high level sessions, which include the UN at 80: Renewing trust and purpose through cooperation and partnership, translating global commitments into national realities, protecting democracy from within: Parliamentary safeguards and renewal in times of democratic erosion and Financing and future-proofing the United Nations.
Speaker Mutti will also hold some bilateral engagements on the margins of the Hearing.
Speaker Mutti is accompanied by Hon. Mubita Anakoka, M.P for Luena Constituency, the Acting Clerk, Mrs Loveness Mayaka and other officials from the National Assembly of Zambia.
