New York, 07.06.25 – The President of the Republic of Zambia, Mr. Hakainde Hichilema has accorded former President Edgar Chagwa Lungu a seven-day national mourning period from Sunday, 8th June 2025, to Saturday, 14th June 2025.
Secretary to Cabinet Mr. Patrick Kangwa announced at a press briefing in Lusaka that the Head of State declared the seven-day of national mourning in line with the guidelines relating to former Republican President.
He said this was in honour of the late former President in recognition of his immense contribution to the nation as 6th President of the Republic of Zambia.
Mr. Kangwa said members of the public were requested to observe the seven days of national mourning from 06:00 to 18:00 hours by postponing or cancelling all entertainment activities while flats shall fly at half mass.
He further announced that the official funeral will be held at Belvedere Lodge in Kabulonga beginning on Sunday, 8th June 2025.
Mr. Kangwa said the remains of Mr. Lungu will arrive in Zambia on Wednesday, 11th June 2025.
The President announced Mr. Lungu’s demise on Thursday, 5th June 2025. Mr. Lungu passed on in South Africa, where he was receiving treatment.
Meanwhile, the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Zambia to the United Nations (UN) will open the signing of the Book of Condolences in memory of the former President of the Republic of Zambia on the following dates:
Monday, 9th June, 2025 : 12:00hrs – 16:00hrs
Tuesday, 10th June, 2025 : 10:30hrs – 16:00hrs
Wednesday, 11th June, 2025 : 10:30hrs – 16:00hrs
