HEALTH MINISTER HON. MUCHIMA CALLS FOR GLOBAL SOLIDARITY TO TACKLE NON-COMMUNICABLE DISEASES AND MENTAL HEALTH CRISI

PRESS RELEASE

For Immediate Release

New York, 27.09.25 – Health Minister, Hon. Elijah Muchima has underscored the critical need for global partnership and increased investment to combat the growing burden of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) and mental health conditions.

Speaking at the Fourth High-Level Meeting on the Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Diseases and the Promotion of Mental Health and Well-being on the sidelines of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly on 25th September 2025, Hon. Muchima noted that addressing health challenges is fundamental to achieving national development goals and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The high-level meeting brought together global leaders to review progress and recommit to tackling NCDs, which include cardiovascular diseases, cancers, and diabetes, and to prioritize mental health services.

The Minister highlighted that NCDs account for over 30 percent of all premature deaths in the country, while mental health conditions are on the rise, particularly among youth and communities affected by climate and humanitarian crises.

Hon. Muchima highlighted that Zambia is implementing a comprehensive, whole-of-government approach focused on increasing domestic financing and access to care; promoting prevention and early detection; empowering youth and communities; and leveraging digital health solutions and partnerships.

The Minister underscored that despite national efforts, critical challenges persist, including limited financing, health workforce constraints, and the need for more reliable diagnostics and essential medicines, especially at the primary care level.

Zambia called for global and regional solidarity to secure sustainable financing for NCD and mental health services.

The Minister also emphasized the need for technical cooperation to build capacity and the integration of these health priorities into climate resilience and emergency response plans.

Hon. Muchima expressed full support for the Political Declaration arising from the meeting and reaffirmed its commitment to its implementation through strengthened policies and inclusive community engagement.
